Not because it broke beyond repair. A cable came loose, or a calibration drifted, or a part needs replacing that nobody on staff knows how to source. The doctor who could use it is one floor away. The engineer who could fix it does not exist in the building, or in the city.
This is not a rare story. Across West Africa, hospitals hold rooms of equipment that arrived through donation or procurement and now sit idle for exactly this reason: a machine is not the same thing as a working machine. Somebody has to stand between the device and the clinic โ someone who understands both the electronics inside the box and the patient waiting outside it.
That person is not quite an electrical engineer, who rarely knows what a clinician actually needs. And they are not a doctor, who rarely knows what is happening inside the machine. Biomedical engineering exists in the gap between the two, and in most West African health systems, that gap is where the equipment goes to die.

Because India has built an entire industry around exactly this constraint: designing and maintaining medical technology for places where budgets are tight, power is unreliable and imported spare parts take weeks to arrive.
Indian engineers did not wait for Western equipment to become affordable. They built low-cost ECG machines, infant warmers and diagnostic devices specifically for rural clinics with the same conditions โ heat, dust, intermittent electricity โ that a district hospital in West Africa deals with every day. That design philosophy, often called frugal engineering, is not a footnote in Indian biomedical training. It is the starting assumption.
You are therefore not learning to maintain equipment built for a Swiss hospital. You are learning in an ecosystem that had to solve, for its own population, the same resource constraints you will return to.

An MRI scanner, a ventilator, a dialysis unit โ installed, and slowly drifting out of calibration because nobody is trained to service it locally. You learn medical imaging systems, biomedical instrumentation and signal processing: how these machines actually work, how to keep them within safe operating tolerances, and how to diagnose a fault before it becomes a failure during a procedure.

Road accidents and untreated diabetes both leave people needing a prosthetic or an orthotic device that fits their body and their life โ not a generic import that half the time gets left in a corner because it does not fit properly. You learn biomechanics, prosthetics and implantable device design: how the human body moves and loads a joint, and how to design a device that survives real use rather than a lab demonstration.

A specialist sits in the capital. The patient who needs them is a six-hour drive away, in a clinic with a nurse, a phone signal, and no cardiologist. You learn telemedicine and connected health systems: how to build the technology link that lets a specialist read a scan, review vitals or guide a procedure from somewhere else entirely.

Every imported device carries a currency risk, a shipping delay and a design built for someone else's climate and someone else's clinic. You learn biomaterials and applied research methodology, including the dissertation that carries you through an original project from question to defence โ the groundwork for eventually designing devices locally instead of only importing them.

Three things rarely found in one person.
Training built for constraint rather than for abundance โ you learn to design and repair for unreliable power, imported parts and tight budgets, because that is the market the training was built for in the first place.
The vocabulary that bridges two worlds. You can explain to a clinician why a device behaves the way it does, and to a manufacturer why a clinic needs something different from the standard export model. Most engineers can do one of those conversations. Few can do both.
And the ground. You know that a donated machine without a maintenance plan becomes a locked door within two years, that a prosthetic fitted without follow-up gets abandoned, that a procurement decision made without a biomedical engineer in the room often buys the wrong equipment entirely. Someone trained elsewhere learns this only after the equipment has already failed.
Two years in India is not only the degree either โ you come back with working English and a contact list spread across several continents. We cover that properly on a separate page: ask us for "What you bring back besides the degree."

In hospitals and private industry, what counts is what you can maintain, design and troubleshoot โ biomedical engineering is judged on competence more than on paper. For a public hospital appointment or a formal academic equivalence at home, procedures vary by country and fall under your ministry of health or education. Check with them before you leave if that is your goal; we provide every document the process requires.
